MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – St. Thomas (5-5. 5-0 TSC) remained undefeated in Sun Conference play with a dramatic 67-66 win over Johnson & Wales (4-8, 0-6 TSC) on Saturday afternoon at the Fernandez Family Center.
Samara Auguste hit a layup with 14 seconds remaining in regulation to provide the game-winner for the Bobcats. Auguste led all scorers with 18 points to go along with five rebounds, five steals and four assists.
Ebony Griffin scored 17 points, pulled down six rebounds and recorded six steals.
Katie Rienas also scored in double figures with 13 points. Chakari Merritt also grabbed six rebounds and scored eight points.
The Bobcats trailed for much of the contest, falling behind 21-19 at the end of the first quarter and 39-36 at halftime. The deficit remained at three points after three quarters, but STU outscored JWU 16-12 in the final quarter for the win.
Trailing 64-62, Auguste hit a key three-pointer on an assist by Rienas to put the Bobcats up by one with 1:04 to play. The Wildcats hit two free throws to go back ahead 66-65, setting up the game-deciding possession where Auguste took her defender one-on-one for the game-winning bucket.
The Bobcats came up with two stops in the final seconds as the Wildcats created a second-chance opportunity from an offensive rebound but were unable to convert.
It marked the fourth straight win overall and the five consecutive conference win for the Bobcats who are one of just two teams remaining undefeated in The Sun Conference.
St. Thomas returns to action with a non-conference game at NCAA DII Barry on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Miami Shores.
