BOBCATS SWEEP LIONS

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - St. Thomas (34-14, 16-8 TSC) swept a doubleheader Saturday to win a three-game conference series over host Florida Memorial (9-28-1, 2-18-1).  STU won the first game 3-2 followed by a 6-1 win in game two.

Erne Valdes (9-1) earned the win in game one, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out eight over seven innings.

Chris Rodriguez (7-2) was the winning pitcher in game two, allowing no earned runs on six hits with eight strikeouts as well.

Brandon Valentin recorded his team-leading sixth save of the season by pitching two shutout innings to close out game one in relief of Valdes.  In game two, Andrew Denis and Anthony Justiniano each pitched one inning of shutout relief to close the door on the Lions.

In game one, FMU led 1-0 until a 2-RBI double by Kendrick Gutierrez scored Orlando Rivera and Randy Oliva to put the Bobcats ahead 2-1.  Michael Centeno then recorded what proved to be the game-winning RBI on a double that scored Daniel Lowry in the top of the sixth giving STU a 3-1 as the Lions scored a run in the bottom of that inning.

The Bobcats were in control all of game two beginning with a RBI-single by Oliva scoring Rivera in the first inning.  Lowry then hit an RBI-triple to score Morales the next inning followed by a sacrifice fly by David Palenzuela in the third inning to extend the lead even further.  Palenzuela ended up with a four-RBI performance to lead the Bobcat charge while Rivera and Centeno each went 3-for-5.

The Bobcats return to action with Senior Night 6 p.m. on Tuesday vs. Palm Beach Atlantic at Paul Demie Mainieri Field.
