BOBCATS TAKE BIG SERIES OVER #3 SEU

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla – St. Thomas split a Saturday doubleheader against Sun Conference foe and third ranked Southeastern. The Bobcats took game one 8-2, but dropped the second game 6-4. Game one saw Erne Valdes pick up his team-leading eighth win of the season.

STU jumped ahead early, with a 3-0 lead through two, but the Fire responded for a quick two runs in the top half of the third inning. In the fourth, the Bobcats got some breathing room when an error and a few hits brought home four runs. Randy Oliva had a single, and Palenzuela followed with a sac fly.

Erne Valdes went six strong innings, collecting 10 strikeouts, walking four, off of three hits and allowed only one earned run. For Valdes, the victory marked his eighth of the season, which leads the team.  Andrew Denis notched the save after pitching three shutout innings to close out the game.

Orlando Rivera went 2-for-4 in the game with two runs, and he was joined by David Palenzuela, who was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate. Palenzuela drove in four runs.

Game two wasn't as sweet for the bobcats, as they had a 3-2 lead early, but ultimately fell 6-4 to the Fire. Oscar Rodriguez was 3-for-4 in game two with an RBI and a run scored.

All in all, it was a successful weekend for the Bobcats, taking the series 2-1 over Southeastern. The team looks to add to their season record when they face off against Lynn University on Tuesday night.
