JOHNSON LEADS BOBCATS TO VICTORY WITH HELP FROM SPANIARD CANDELA

MIAMI GARDENS, FLA.- St. Thomas (2-0-1) earned a 3-0 victory against cross-town rivals Florida Memorial (0-1) on Wednesday night in the home opener for the Bobcats.

STU took a 1-0 lead at the 21st minute in the first half when Jannel Johnson received a pinpoint perfect pass from Amyah Banks. She cut quickly to the right on a defender then launched a chip over the head of the keeper.

The second half brought more action from St. Thomas as Johnson put her second goal of the night, completing her brace, at the 60th minute. An absolute screamer off the left foot of the forward, as Eva Castano Candela fed the ball through to Johnson, assisting her for the score.

The Spanish word "candela" means "fire" and the forward from Spain played nothing short of that as she scored a rocket that passed the keeper in the 66th minute, her first goal of the season. The third goal solidified the Bobcat victory.

Starting goal keeper Cristina Garwacki secured the net for St. Thomas as she recorded her first clean sheet of the season, while she also picked up one save on the night.

Next up for St. Thomas is a home match up on Wednesday, September 6th against Florida National at 7 p.m.

Come out and support as the Bobcats host the Conquistadores under the lights!
