BOBCATS MAKE IT THREE IN A ROW WITH STRAIGHT SET WIN OVER AMU

MIAMI GARDENS, FLA.- St. Thomas (4-5, 3-0 TSC) swept Ave Maria (1-7, 1-1 TSC) in straight sets (25-22, 25-8, 25-13) on Wednesday night in The Sun Conference play.

With this win, the Bobcats are now undefeated in conference play and are on a three match win streak.

The first set of the match proved to be the closest one on the night with STU and AMU trading points in the opening set.

With the Bobcats in need of a quick gain in momentum, Courtney White stepped up to the challenge and brought home a service ace. The brilliantly placed service ace brought the score line to a 19-14 lead in favor of STU gave them a quick jolt. After a quick two points from Ave Maria, both teams went back and forth on points for the remainder of the set as the Bobcats would take the first set by a score of 25-22.

The second set was the quickest one of the match as St. Thomas opened the set with a 9-1 scoring run. This run would push AMU to call a time out early. The Bobcats, behind the great sets of Kimberly Martino (three assists), powerful kills from five different Bobcats and a block assist from Carli Batsel and White, would only allow seven more points in the set as the match looked to go STU's way with a score in set two of 25-8.

The Bobcats also put some impeccable defense on display in the second set, as the team tallied 11 timely digs and two statement making blocks.

The third and final set opened with a back and forth brawl for the lead as Ave Maria would tie the set at 8-8 and force a Bobcat timeout. A rapid 6-0 run from STU put Ave in a tough spot as they then needed to burn a timeout. Both Carly Durr and Martino connected on two of the six points as the Bobcat setter picked up two of her 28 assists on the night while Durr earned two of her six kills.

As a team, the lead was at 10 in favor of STU as the score line read 20-10. Newcomer Angelina Quintana had a timely attack that landed precisely in the corner to earn her the kill, which helped the Bobcats hold off the Gyrenes to only three more points in the set as the final score of the set was 25-13.

Offensively on the night, Batsel registered a team-high eight kills on the night, which mended perfectly with her three block assists. Whitney Battoe recorded seven kills along with her five digs. Martino not only assisted on 28 occasions but she also aced AMU twice.

Defensively, Bobcat freshman Victoria Philpot blocked on two separate occasions while Haley Bannister recorded 13 digs and Veronica Gomez eight.

Next up for the Bobcats is a road match on Friday, September 29 against Grace College at 3 p.m. in the Holiday Inn Express Tournament in Bourbonnais, Ill. Hours after, STU will play in a second match at 7 p.m. against Taylor University.
