MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The St. Thomas University Women's Basketball Team (6-4, 3-1 TSC) overcame a fourth quarter deficit to defeat Sun Conference opponent, Keiser University (5-6, 1-4 TSC) in overtime 84-76 on Thursday evening from the Fernandez Family Center.
Â
The Seahawks scored the first bucket and took the lead and held it throughout the majority of the first quarter. As the quarter consisted of back-and-forth offense, the game was tied four times through the first several minutes of play. Keiser was able to maintain control and take a five-point lead with 1:46 left in the first quarter. St. Thomas was able to show resiliency, as the team brought the score within one, when
Samara Auguste nailed a three-pointer from
Keiana Brooks to head into the second quarter.
Â
In the second quarter Keiser continued their offensive momentum as they gained a nine-point lead over St. Thomas. STU cut the deficit down to a manageable, six before halftime.
To open the third quarter, Keiser extended the lead to ten points as the Bobcats battled to keep the lead to single-digits as Auguste and
Ebony Griffin, kept the offense alive; Auguste scored eight-points and Griffin scored six-points and led the Bobcats in the third quarter.
Â
The Bobcats magic was reserved for the fourth quarter as an 8-2 run brought them within one point, courtesy of
Jaddah Knight who had five of the eight points. The Seahawks extended their lead to eight with 1:51 left on the clock. STU capitalized on three consecutive possessions as Auguste scored five straight points, and the ultimate dagger was hit by
Samaria August. The freshman, August, hit the game-tying three-pointer with eleven-seconds left on the clock. STU's defense was able to lock down the inbound and draw a five-second violation for the Seahawks to regain possession with 10.9 seconds remaining on the clock. St. Thomas was unable to capitalize and thus, the game was forced into overtime.
Â
The game took a big turn as the Bobcats gained their first lead of the night in overtime. An aggressive offense came out and took charge as STU got out to an early eight-point lead, the largest of the night to secure the victory!
