MIAMI GARDENS, Fla.- St. Thomas (8-1, 1-0 TSC) opened its Sun Conference play with a 7-inning shutout against rival Ave Maria (5-10, 1-3 TSC) Saturday night at Paul Demie Mainieri Field by a final score of 13-0.
It was non-stop raking for the Bobcats offense as 13 runs were brought in on the night on 17 hits, putting the team up 102-27 in runs scored vs. runs allowed in just nine games played.
Jackie Urbaez led the Bobcats offensively, going 4-for-5 with two doubles and five RBI. Sergio Lopez continued his hot start to the season, going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Nelson Mompierre added a 2-for-2 night at the plate as well with a RBI, as well.
Orlando Rodriguez (2-0) pitched six scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while striking out eight to earn the win. Rodriguez extended his scoreless innings streak on the season to 15.
It was the first inning in which the Bobcats opened up with two runs, both coming off of powerful doubles, one from Lopez down the left field line and another by Mompierre down the right field line. Pinch runner
Chris Allende scored off of the Lopez double and Lopez was later brought home by the Mompierre double.
The Bobcats offense would go on to score at least one run in all seven on the innings in the game, as they were able to run-rule the Gyrenes.
Up next for St. Thomas is a doubleheader starting at noon on Saturday as the Bobcats complete the series against Ave Maria University at Paul Demie Mainieri Field
