STU SWEEPS AVE MARIA TO OPEN TSC PLAY

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – #21 St. Thomas (10-1, 3-0 TSC) swept a doubleheader Saturday as well as the series over Ave Maria (5-12, 1-5 TSC) at Paul Demie Mainieri Field to open up Sun Conference play.  The Bobcats won the first game 4-0 behind a one-hit, 10 strikeout performance by starter Chris Rodriguez (2-0) before winning the second game 15-4 in seven innings by way of the 10-run rule.

In game one of the doubleheader, the Bobcats received a career performance from Rodriguez. Rodriguez retired the first 11 Gyrenes he faced before allowing a walk. That would be the only AMU batter to reach base until the ninth inning. Rodriguez would take a no-hitter all the way until two outs in the ninth before allowing a hit. He finished off the next batter to wrap up the complete-game, one-hit performance. Rodriguez compiled 10 strikeouts and allowed just the one hit and two walks on the afternoon to shut down Ave Maria.

The ten strikeouts tied a career high for Rodriguez, while the performance marked the third complete game in the career of the senior right-hander.

Offensively, St. Thomas was led by Jackie Urbaez (1-3, Solo HR, 2 RBIs), who would use a lead-off home run on the second pitch of the game to earn his second consecutive golden rake honor. The Bobcats would also get insurance runs off the bats of Chris Garabedian (1-4, RBI) and Jose Brito (1-3, RBI) to cruise to the victory in game one of the double header.

In game two, Rene Arauz (2-1) got the start for the Bobcats who were looking to sweep the Sun Conference series.  Arauz pitched five innings, striking out three, while allowing seven hits and four earned runs en route to earning the win. Sawyer Losey and Erne Valdes would each pitch an inning to finish off the series.

The Bobcats offensive would continue to rake and was led by Nelson Mompierre (2-2, 3 RBIs, 3 runs scored) who earned his first golden rake honor of the season. Sergio Lopez (3-4, Solo HR, 3 runs scored) hit his team leading third home run of the season on top of the batting cages leading off the second inning. Elih Marrero (1-4, HR, 3 RBIs) would hit the first home run of his St Thomas University career in the sixth inning.  In addition to Marrero's home run, Chris Allende (1-1, 2-run HR) came off the bench as a pinch hitter for the Bobcats and hit the first pitch he saw over the right field fence for his first home run as well. Oscar Rodriguez (3-4, 3 RBIs) added a three hit day for the Bobcats.

Up next for the the 21st ranked St. Thomas University Bobcats is a midweek game against first year program, Florida National University on Tuesday, February 20th at 6 p.m. at Paul Demie Mainieri Field.
