#9 STU FINISHES TSC SWEEP OVER THOMAS

THOMASVILLE, GA. -  No. 9 St. Thomas University (26-3, 8-1 TSC) swept the doubleheader over Thomas University (14-17, 2-10 TSC) on Saturday, March 17th at Varnedoe Stadium with scores of 9-8 and 6-2 in the two games. The sweep of the doubleheader completed the series sweep for St. Thomas over Thomas and pushed the Bobcats winning streak to 13.

In game one of the doubleheader, Chris Rodriguez got the start. Rordriguez was only able to pitch three and one third innings as he was not the benefactor of good defense behind him. Rodriguez was chased from the game in the fourth inning when Thomas plated six runs off of three STU errors. Danger Guevara came in to pitch in relief of Rodriguez, going three and two thirds innings to give the Bobcats an opportunity to stay in the game.

Sawyer Losey (2-0) earned the win in relief for the Bobcats pitching only the eighth inning and setting down the Nighthawks in order. Erne Valdes earned his fourth save of the season and second in as many games pitching the ninth after the Bobcats reclaimed the lead in the top half of the inning.

The Bobcats offense received contributions from the entire lineup as all nine of the hitters had at least one hit, collecting 17 as a unit. The scoring got started early once again as STU opened the game with a first inning run on a RBI ground-out from Nelson Mompierre (2-5, 2 RBI) which brought in Jackie Urbaez (3-4, 2 R).

St. Thomas would later add three more runs in the third, two runs coming from a Sergio Lopez (2-5, 2 RBI) and two more in the sixth. The Bobcats would trail 8-6 heading to the ninth inning and needing to come back against Thomas. The inning got started with back-to-back doubles from Chris Garabedian (3-4, RBI, 2 R) as Mompierre and the Bobcats were able to tie it on a RBI single up the middle by Oscar Rodriguez (1-5, RBI) and take the lead on a double steal which scored Gus Guerra. The three-hit day from Garabedian would earn him his third Golden Rake nomination on the season.

In game two of the doubleheader, the Bobcats would need a little more Irish luck on St. Patrick's Day as the team came back late in the game once again.

Ian Exposito (4-0) pitched well once again, going seven innings with four strikeouts, only allowing two earned runs. Exposito would turn the ball over to Tyler Morales in the eighth inning after two Nighthawk runners reached base. Morales would get out of that jam and pitch the ninth as well to close out the game for St. Thomas as the Bobcats finished the conference sweep.

The Bobcats were unable to generate any offense until the sixth inning when Urbaez (4-5, Solo HR, 2 RBI) launched his third home run of the season off of the foul pole in left field. That would be the only STU offense until the eighth inning, where the team erupted for a five-run frame.

Daniel Lowry (1-4, R) got the inning started with a double which was immediately followed by another off the bat of Urbaez to tie the game. The Bobcats would take the lead for good on a two-run double from Nelson Mompierre (1-4, 2 RBI) who would hit a two-run double with the bases loaded. Urbaez would earn his fourth Golden Rake on the four-hit afternoon.

Up next for the ninth ranked St. Thomas Bobcats is a midweek match-up between #13 Keiser University at Paul Demie Mainieri Field on Tuesday, March 20th with first pitch at 6 p.m.
