MIAMI GARDENS, Fla.- No. 7 St. Thomas (26-4) dropped a tough midweek matchup against conference rivals no. 13 Keiser (23-6) late Tuesday night at Paul Demie Mainieri Field by a final score of 15-9.
The Bobcats opened up the score line early as they brought in two runs in the second inning off the bats of
Oscar Rodriguez and
Erick Delgado. They both brought in
Sergio Lopez and
Randy Oliva, respectively, in the form of a single.
It was a third inning response from the Seahawks that truly caught the home side off guard. A six run-explosion from the opposition put STU in a tight spot as they were down 6-2. The bottom half of the third inning had St. Thomas bring in two more runs as both
Elih Marrero and
Nelson Mompierre scored.
From then on, the Bobcats were held scoreless until the eighth inning, but it wasn't enough as the runs were scored too late in the game.
On the night, Marrero went 3-for-5 with one RBI and one run while Delgado went 2-for-4 with two RBI in the game.
On the defensive end,
Alex Sarmiento pitched 2.2 scoreless innings with two K and two hits.
Despite the loss, St. Thomas has won 15 of its last 17 games.
Next up for the Bobcats is a home weekend conference matchup against the University of South Carolina Beaufort beginning on Friday, March 23 at 6 p.m. at Paul Demie Mainieri Field.
