#9 STU GETS "SPRING RAKE" SWEEP OVER SXU AT TIGERTOWN

LAKELAND, Fla. - #9 St. Thomas University (19-3, 5-1 TSC) finished off their visit to Joker Marchant Stadium, the Spring Training home of the Detroit Tigers, with an 11-3 victory over St. Xavier University (5-10) on Tuesday afternoon. The Bobcats are currently on a six game winning streak during their spring break trip.

The three games played at Tigertown were made possible due to the generosity of Bobcat Sports Hall of Famer Al Avila of the Detroit Tigers.  Avila, who graduated with both Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Sports Administration from St. Thomas University and once served as Head Baseball Coach and Director of Athletics at STU, is currently the Executive Vice President for Baseball Operations and General Manager for the Detroit Tigers.

Rene Arauz (3-1) earned his third win of the season, as the sophomore went seven innings with seven strikeouts, allowing only two hits and one earned run. Arauz would retire nine straight Cougars from the fourth to the sixth inning which allowed the St. Thomas offense an opportunity to take the lead. Tyler Morales and Tyeler Checkley would each pitch an inning to finish off the game and theseries against St. Xavier.

The offense was once again led by first baseman, Chris Garabedian who added yet another multi-hit game, his 13th of the season. Garabedian went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs, the performance was able to earn Garabedian his second Golden Rake award during "Spring Rake" and the second nomination on the season. Randy Oliva also added two hits, going 2-for-4 with a RBI as well. Jackie Urbaez also added three RBIs for the Bobcats on the game, going 1-for-3.

The Bobcats found themselves trailing early, as St. Xavier had an early 1-0 lead in the second. St. Thomas would respond with two runs in the fourth to claim the lead on an Oscar Rodriguez double which plated Sergio Lopez, followed by a Randy Oliva single to bring in Jack Diaz. The 2-1 score would remain that way until the seventh inning when the Bobcats offense would add three runs in each of the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings to finish off the series.

Up next for the ninth ranked St. Thomas University Bobcats is a return trip to Paul Demie Mainieri Field to take on Stratford University on Wednesday, March 7th at 6 p.m. as the Bobcats continue their "Spring Rake" games.
