EL CAJON, Calif. - St. Thomas (1-7) won the second game of a doubleheader at host San Diego Christian (9-7) as the Spring Break road swing in California continued Thursday afternoon.
Starting pitcher
Brandi Bunker earned the victory for the Bobcats after pitching a complete game, allowing just six hits. Bunker struck out three and allowed three runs in her seven innings of work.
Alliya Sands led the Bobcats offensively with a four RBI performance, going 2-of-3 at the plate.
GiGi Santos went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while
Melody Grafals and
Alexis Castroman each went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Michelle Murch,
Alexa Spellman, and
McKenna Delaware all recorded RBIs as well.
The Bobcats jumped ahead early as Sands hit an RBI single to score
Nanet Manieri in the top of the first.
Sands then hit a two-RBI single in the top of the third score Manieri for a second time as well as Grafals.
San Diego Christian came within one run of the Bobcats with two runs in the third, but STU answered with a huge fourth inning.
In the five-run frame, Delaware drove in Santos on an RBI bunt that also moved Castroman to third. Castroman then scored on a wild pitch which was followed by a Murch single to score Delaware.
The big inning continued as Sands drew a bases loaded walk scoring Bunker. The Bobcats were not done yet however as Spellman singled to left field to score Manieri for her third run scored in the contest.
SDC would score one run in the bottom of the sixth, but it was too little too late as Bunker and the Bobcat defense shut the door in the bottom of the seventh.
Earlier in game one of the doubleheader, the Bobcats lost a 13-11 slugfest. Grafals went 2-for-4 with another home run. Delaware went 3-for-3 with 4 RBI. Castroman was 3-for-4, while Santos: 4-for-5 with three runs scored.
The California road trip will conclude for the Bobcats on Saturday with a doubleheader at California Baptist in Riverside, Calif.
