FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – No. 4 ranked St. Thomas University (43-4, 20-1 TSC) defeated 9
th ranked NCAA Division II Nova Southeastern University (26-10) on 7-3 on Tuesday night from the NSU Baseball Complex.
The win marked the Bobcats 17
th straight, 30
th in last 31 and completed the NCAA DII slate of games with a 10-1 record.
Danger Guevara (4-0) earned his fourth win of the season as he pitched six innings, with six strikeouts and allowing only two earned runs. St. Thomas turned to
Jose Pupo,
Alex Sarmiento, and
Tyler Morales to finish off the game. Each of the relievers went an inning to shut down the Sharks' offense.
NSU opened the scoring on a double play in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead over the Bobcats. St. Thomas was being no-hit until the fifth inning when Nelson Mompierre (1-2, Solo HR) launched his team leading 12
th home run of the season to left to tie the game. Chris Garabedian followed with a double to put himself on base for Sergio Lopez (2-4, 2-R HR, Solo
HR) who crushed his first of two home runs on the day onto the classrooms in left.
NSU responded with a two-run home run of their own in the sixth to tie the game up at 3-3. Lopez once again gave the Bobcats the lead with his second home run in the seventh inning, which put the Bobcats in the lead for good at 4-3. St. Thomas scored three more runs in the eighth inning to put the game away.
Up next for the fourth ranked St. Thomas University Bobcats is a trip back up to Lakeland as STU takes on the No. 3 Southeastern University to complete the regular season Sun Conference games with the regular season Sun Conference championship on the line with the series starting at 6 p.m. on Friday night.
