BOBCATS COME UP SHORT AT SEU

LAKELAND, Fla. - The St. Thomas University Softball team traveled to Central Florida for the team's final regular season conference road trip of the season for a doubleheader at Southeastern University on Wednesday afternoon.  The Bobcats fell 5-0 to the Fire in game one of the doubleheader, then dropped the second game 4-1.

With Jennifer Acevedo getting the start in game one, the Bobcats held Southeastern scoreless for the first two innings before a run came in for the Fire in the bottom of the third.

Acevedo and the Bobcat defense continued to keep SEU in check with a scoreless fourth inning.  The Fire however would score two runs in both the fifth and the sixth innings to secure the win.

Offensively, the Bobcats managed four hits in game one as Melody Grafals, Alliyah Sands, Jamie Gonzalez and Michelle Murch each registered singles.  McKenna Delaware recorded a stolen base in the opening game as well.

In game two, Alexis Castroman started on the mound for the Bobcats.  Castroman went  three innings, allowing two runs on two hits.  Emily Santos then pitched three innings as well, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out three.

SEU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, then built a 4-0 lead heading into the top of the seventh.  With one last chance for the Bobcats, Nanet Manieri hit a single to left field, then advanced to second on an error.  Manieri stole third, then scored on a double-steal play to cut the lead to 4-1.  However, the deficit proved too much to overcome as the game ended on a caught stealing on the same play.

Grafals went 2-3 with a double in game two which was complemented by singles by Murch, Gonzalez, Manieri and Brandi Bunker.

STU returns to action on Saturday for a doubleheader vs. Sun Conference foe Keiser.  The action starts at 1 p.m. at Col. Jacquelin J. Kelly Field.  Honorary Bobcat Madison Smith is scheduled to throw out the first pitch prior to game one of the doubleheader.
