MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The St. Thomas University Bobcats (0-1) dropped the season opening match against the 25th ranked University of Jamestown Jimmies (1-0) in straight sets to open the STU Invitational tournament sponsored by Legacy Team Sales.

The Bobcats fell behind early in the first set by a score of 11-6 but rallied to comeback and cut the Jimmie lead to just one point by winning six of seven points to make the score 12-11 in favor of UJ. Ultimately, STU dropped the first set 25-20.

St. Thomas looked to bounce back in the second set of the match against the Jamestown Jimmies but never quite seemed to get on a roll and lost the set 25-15.

In the third set of the match, St. Thomas found their backs against the wall and rallied to a quick 4-0 lead. As the match progressed, UJ came back to claim the lead at 12-11 and never forfeited it back to the Bobcats. The Jimmies were leading 23-18 as the match went into its final plays but not before a comeback by the Bobcats offense which brought the game to 24-23 as newcomers, Krista Kolbinskie and Nathaly Alvarez led the attempt which fell just short as the Bobcats dropped the final set by a score of 25-23.

Overall, STU was led by Kolbinskie and Alvarez who both recorded 11 kills, Alvarez also recorded 19 assists on the evening. Freshman Sophia Deaguero had 17 digs in the match as well, while Victoria Philpot finished with four total blocks.

The Bobcats will be back in action tomorrow evening as the STU Invitational presented by Legacy Team Sales continues into day two with doubleheader action starting at 5:00 p.m. against Rochester College and then at 7:00 p.m. against #3 Missouri Baptist University.
