MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – St. Thomas University (3-0) defeated Florida National University (1-3) in a double overtime thriller by a score of 3-2 on Tuesday, September 4
th from Bobcat field.
The Bobcats offense was able to provide themselves numerous scoring opportunities throughout the match, totaling 38 shots to Florida Nationals nine. However, the team was shut-down in net by Conquistador goalkeeper, Briana Gomez. Gomez totaled 15 saves on the match, fortunately for St. Thomas the Bobcats were able to get three goals past her en route to the victory.
STU was trailing FNU 1-0 after 30 minutes of play before
Maria Vega was able to net the first equalizer of the match for the Bobcats off a corner-kick in the 41
st minute. Florida National once again reclaimed the lead in the 59
th minute and hung on until the final 11 minutes of the match before St. Thomas once again tied it, this time off a Karla Translavania free kick in the 76
th minute. The score remained tied through the end of regulation and through a whole OT period as the drama increased with each passing minute.
That was before the leading scorer for the Bobcats, Eva Castaño Candela, was able to net her team leading fourth goal of the season in the 116
th minute of the match on a header off an
Amanda Gordon assist. The ball rolled past the hands of Gomez and into the net as the Bobcats once again left the match victorious to improve to 3-0 on the season.
