#6 BOBCATS GET OPENING DAY WIN OVER TROJANS

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (January 22, 2019) – Sixth-ranked St. Thomas University Baseball (1-0) defeated the Taylor University Trojans (2-1) 3-2 on Opening Night from Paul Demie Mainieri Field on Tuesday night.

Game Notes
  • Keanu Guzman got the Opening Day starting nod for the Bobcats against Taylor and opened with a 1-2-3 inning in the 1st with a strikeout.
  • In the bottom half of the first, Jackie Urbaez got the first hit of the season for STU as the Preseason All-American reached on a drag bunt to second base.
  • Chris Garabedian followed Urbaez with a single of his own to put runners on first and second base for the clean-up hitter, Sergio Lopez.
  • Lopez drove in the first two-runs of the Bobcats season, lining a double off the left-center field to bring in both Urbaez and Garabedian, giving STU an early 2-0 lead.
  • Guzman went back on the mound in the second inning and added two more strikeouts to provide the Bobcats with a shutdown inning.
  • Daniel Mondejar led off the 2nd inning with a single before being replaced on the bases by Joey Thompson. Thompson's added speed allowed him to score from first base on a Nick Izquierdo RBI double to left field as STU opened a 3-0 lead.
  • Guzman ran into trouble in the 3rd inning as he allowed two-runs on a bases loaded double to cut the St. Thomas lead to 3-2.
  • Guzman was replaced by Jason Graña with two outs and runners on second and third base. Graña got out of the jam with a fly-out to left field.
  • Graña earned his first win of the season, pitching 2.1 shutout innings.
  • Following Graña, was Joel Rivero, Ernesto Pino, Christopher Coipel and Tyler Morales. The Bobcats bullpen pitched the final 6.1 IP without allowing a run, allowing two hits and striking out seven.
