VOGEL'S DOUBLE-DOUBLE LEADS STU TO "BATTLE OF MIAMI GARDENS" WIN

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (December 7, 2019) - St. Thomas University Women's Basketball (6-4, 3-1 TSC) claimed round one of the "Battle of Miami Gardens" defeating cross-town rival, Florida Memorial University (6-5, 2-2 TSC) 62-50 on Saturday evening from the Fernandez Family Center.

  • Florida Memorial began the game on a 6-0 run before Dozier halted the rally with a three-point shot to cut the deficit in half. 
  • STU closed the first quarter on a 12-0 run, started following the Dozier three, and continued as Brooks and Vogel added buckets. Dozier added another three-pointer to cap the rally, giving the Bobcats a 12-6 lead.
  • Five consecutive points from Dozier pushed the St. Thomas lead to double-digits, 24-14.
  • The two teams went scoreless for the final two minutes of the second quarter, heading into the break with the Bobcats leading 24-16. 
  • St. Thomas began the second half on a 6-0 rally, with Brooks, Martinez - Sanz, and Domond all adding lay-ups.
  • A three-pointer from Martinez - Sanz extended the lead to fifteen points, midway through the third quarter, 36-21.
  • Samaria August added a three-point bucket of her own, pushing the lead to 16-points and were the last Bobcat points of the third quarter. St. Thomas entered the fourth quarter leading, 41-31.
  • FMU cut the STU lead to five, 43-38 before a Vogel lay-up pushed the lead back to seven.  
  • Brooks once again assumed the role as closer, scoring five consecutive points for STU and putting the Bobcats ahead 58-46 with just over one minute remaining.
