STU SWEEPS DAY ONE AT PFX SPRING GAMES

CLERMONT, FLA. (March 1st, 2019) – The St. Thomas University's Softball team (8-2) swept day one at the PFX Spring Games on Friday afternoon as they defeated Briar Cliff University (1-1) 4-0 and Spring Arbor University (1-1) 6-5 from the National Training Center Legends Way Ballfields.

Game One Notes
  • The Bobcats got on board in the bottom of the first as Delaware drew a walk to get on, Sands doubled to move her over to third, and then scored on a passed ball. 1-0 lead.
  • A big fourth inning for STU as Delaware once again got the offense started with a single down the right field line.
  • After a pitching change for the Chargers, the Bobcats tacked on two back-to-back hits as Castroman singled and then Colon came up and delivered an RBI double off the left field fence.
  • Delaware scored off a wild pitch before the Colon double making the game 3-0.
  • In the bottom half of the fifth, STU was able to scratch for one more run.
  • Grafals reached on a fielder's choice and had pinch runner Manieri.
  • Delaware delivered once again for the Bobcats as she hit an RBI single to left field.
  • Acevedo took a perfect game into the seventh inning not letting a soul on the bases through six innings of play.
  • The perfect game was broken in the top of the seventh as the lead-off hitter singled to right field.
  • Acevedo retired the next three batters in order.

  • This is the second time this season that Acevedo throws a one-hitter.

Game Two Notes
  • The Cougars jumped on the board first as they scored in the bottom half of the first to take a 1-0 lead.
  • STU had a massive top of the third inning to take a 4-1 lead.
  • G. Santos started it off with an infield single to the shortstop, Delaware reached on a fielder's choice, and Sands recorded a bunt single to load the bases.
  • E. Santos was able to reach on a fielder's choice to the shortstop as G. Santos crossed the plate to even the game at one.
  • Colon came up in the clutch and delivered a single to left field and drove in Sands.
  • Spalding helped herself out at the plate as she hit into a fielder's choice that drove in Santos and an error by the short led to Manieri scoring as well and capped off the inning.
  • The Bobcats added two more insurance runs in the top half of the fifth as three consecutive singles from Manieri, Colon, and Descheene set the table for Spalding to record a sacrifice fly and bring home Manieri and advanced the runners into scoring position.
  • The ultimate run that made the difference came off an error by the shortstop that allowed Grafals to reach and Colon to score making it 6-1.
  • Spring Arbor would try to put together a rally in the bottom half of the sixth scoring three runs, off of two hits, and two Bobcat errors bringing it within one, 6-5.
  • Spalding would retire the Cougars in order in the last frame to seal the victory and sweep.
