MIAMI GARDENS, FL. (May 14
th, 2019) – The Miami Gardens Bracket of the NAIA Opening Round continued through day two of the national tournament on Tuesday, at Paul Demie Mainieri Field. Two teams (Bryan College and Talladega College) concluded their seasons, St. Thomas University clinched a championship berth and two teams will face elimination on Wednesday.
The first game of the day, featured the third seed, Bryan College and the fifth seed, Thomas University.
Game One
In the first elimination game of the day, the Nighthawks and Lions played in a slugfest that featured 23 hits and 21 runs. Bryan opened the scoring with a two-run top of the second inning, taking a 2-0 lead. The Lions added seven runs in the top of the sixth inning, highlighted by Lake Burris' (2-5, 3-R HR) second home run of the tournament, 28
th of the season, to take a commanding, 9-0 lead.
The Nighthawks responded with a three-run bottom of the sixth inning, as Jake Bryan (2-5, 3-R HR), also added his second home run of the tournament, to cut the deficit to 9-3. Clayton Faircloth, who escaped the top of the sixth inning, recorded the first out in the top of the seventh before handing over the ball to Hassan Westbrook. Westbrook finished the seventh and pitched the remainder of the game for the Nighthawks.
TU cut the BC lead in half, 10-5, with a two-run bottom of the eighth inning. In the bottom of the ninth inning, the first six Nighthawk runners all reached base, scoring four runs, before recording an out. The score sat even at 10-10 and with the bases loaded, Levi O'Steen proved to the hero, singling to center field and completing the Nighthawk comeback, as Thomas fought off elimination with a walk-off victory.

No. 1 seed, St. Thomas University, advanced to the NAIA Opening Round Championship Game for the fourth time in the past five seasons, following a 7-2 win over No. 2 William Jessup University in game five of the Miami Gardens Bracket.

Game Notes
- Sun Conference Pitcher of the Year, Ian Exposito (11-2), earned his team-leading 11th win of the season. Exposito pitched seven innings, striking out 10, while allowing two runs (one earned).
- Exposito battled through control issues in the first inning, hitting two batters and allowing a run on a wild pitch.
- In the bottom of the second inning, St. Thomas scored two runs on two Warrior errors, taking a 2-1 lead.
- In the bottom of the third inning, with the bases loaded, Alejandro Rivero drove a single off the left-center field fence to bring in Urbaez and Delgao, extending the STU lead to 4-1.
- A sacrifice fly, courtesy of Jack Diaz, brought in Lopez as the Bobcats took a 5-1 lead.
- Exposito struck out the side, as part of his 10-strikeout performance, in the top of the fourth inning.
- WJU scored their second run of the contest in the top of the fifth inning, following a RBI single, cutting the deficit to 5-2
- St. Thomas added a run in the bottom of the fifth, as Delgado scored his second run of the game on a RBI groundout.
- Jason Graña entered the game out of the bullpen for St. Thomas in the top of the eighth inning, recording a strikeout.
- STU added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning, as a sacrifice fly from Joey Thompson, scored Joel Rivero, extending the lead to 7-2.
- Graña pitched the ninth inning, as well, allowing one run and sealing the victory with his second strikeout of the game.
Upcoming
St. Thomas now awaits the winner of William Jessup versus Thomas/Talladega in the 11:30 a.m. game on Wednesday. The Bobcats need one win to clinch their seventh Avista-NAIA World Series berth in program history and third trip in the past five seasons (2015, 2018).

Game six of the Miami Gardens featured the second elimination game of the day. Following the dramatic, walk-off victory to stave off elimination in the morning, the Nighthawks returned for a rematch of game one of the Miami Gardens Bracket against Talladega.
Thomas maintained their game one momentum, opening the game with two runs in the top of the first inning, following a two-run double be Lance Boyette. The Nighthawks extended the lead with a four-run top of the third inning, as Bryan homered for the third consecutive game in the NAIA Opening Round. TU broke the game open with another four-run inning in the top of the sixth, taking a 10-0 lead.
Patrick Haley (5-3) earned his fifth win of the season, pitching 7.1 innings, before turning the ball over to Brent Summers in the eighth inning with the bases loaded. Summers escaped the jam with three pitches, preserving the 11-0 lead.
