MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (August 16
th, 2019) – For the first time in St. Thomas University Cheerleading & Dance program history, the teams competed competitively in the National Cheer & National Dance Association Camp in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
In preparation for the National Camp, the cheerleading team learned a variety of stunts, baskets, pyramids, dances and chants, while putting together a game-day routine as well as a rally routine. The two routines had to last at least 45 seconds and they were judged on crowd appeal, showmanship, use of props, crowd response and execution.
Bobcat cheerleaders competed with six teams in the intermediate division, placing 3rd. The team was awarded a "Spirit Stick" and a bronze bid to College Nationals in Daytona, Fla. The game-day routine was ruled as excellent and the rally routine received a superior.
On the dance side of the competition, there were 16 teams competing from across the United States of America. Bobcat dancers placed third and received a bronze bid, as well as a "Spirit Stick".
Bobcat Dance Captain and co-Captain, Katelyn Cano and
Chelsey Pierre, received All-American honors, first in school history. National camp judges awarded the honor to the pair based upon their etiquette, overall appearance, sportsmanship, technique and execution of the dances.
The teams will continue to prepare for the first football game scheduled for September 7th, at Monsignor Pace High School. From there they will continue to support the Bobcat varsity sports at home events.
