#2 BOBCATS OPEN SEASON WITH WIN OVER LIONS

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (January 28, 2020) - No. 2 St. Thomas University Bobcats baseball (1-0) began the 2020 season with a dominant 9-3 win over crosstown rival, Florida Memorial (0-1) on Tuesday afternoon from Harry T. Moore Field.

St. Thomas is in the midst of a 34-game winning streak against Florida Memorial, dating back to 4/10/2009.

Game Notes
  • St. Thomas scored their first runs of the 2020 season with two runs in the second inning.
  • Mondejar led off with a single and was replaced by courtesy runner, Gus Guerra.
  • Khawly doubled down the left-field line, bringing in Martinez to score and giving STU a 1-0 advantage.
  • Estevez followed with a double of his own, scoring Khawly and extending the Bobcat lead.
  • Pino responded to the run support with a 1-2-3 inning, shutting down the Lions offense.
  • In the third inning, Mondejar recorded his second hit of the game, driving in Lopez with an RBI single to left-field.
  • The Bobcats broke the game open in the top of the fourth inning, scoring four runs, all with two outs.
  • Thompson brought in two runs with a bases-loaded double to center-field and Rivero followed with an RBI double of his own, as STU took a 7-0 lead.
  • Pino continued to stifle Florida Memorial, recording 3-of-7 strikeouts in the bottom of the fourth inning to preserve his shut-out.
  • Pino finished his afternoon following the fifth inning, adding his final strikeout but allowing his lone run.
  • Tyler Morales entered the game for St. Thomas in the sixth inning, replacing Pino. Morales allowed one run in his only inning of work.
  • STU scored two more runs in the top of the seventh inning, extending the lead to 9-2.
  • Martinez scored Guerra on an RBI single up the middle and later scored on a wild pitch.
  • Perez Nichols relieved Morales and made his St. Thomas University debut, striking out two Lions.
  • JJ Galvis and Felipe Soto also made their first appearances of the season for the Bobcats. Soto recorded the final three outs as STU sealed the 9-3, season-opening win over FMU.
