#2 STU LOSES IN EXTRAS AGAINST BARRY

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (February 11, 2020) - No. 2 St. Thomas University (STU) Baseball (6-2) lost in extra innings against NCAA Division II opponent, Barry University (7-0) 8-6 on Tuesday night from Paul Demie Mainieri Field.

Before the game, St. Thomas University and the Boras Corporation dedicated the new Boras Grandstands in a pregame ceremony.

Game Notes
  • Barry began the game with three consecutive singles, leading to the opening run of the game, as the Buccaneers took a 1-0 lead.
  • BU added a second run in the top of the first inning, scoring on an RBI groundout and taking a 2-0 lead.
  • The first four St. Thomas hitters reached base in the bottom half of the first inning, taking a 3-2 lead courtesy of back-to-back wild pitches.
  • The Buccaneers tied the game in the top of the second inning, scoring once again on an RBI groundout.
  • Galvis was replaced by freshman, Luis Gonzalez in the top of the fourth inning. Gonzalez lasted 1.1 innings before being taken out for Michael Pope-Diaz.
  • Pope-Diaz entered the game with a potential go-ahead run on third base but struck out back-to-back Buccaneer hitters to escape the jam.
  • Barry broke the 3-3 stalemate with a two-run double in the top of the sixth inning, taking a 5-3 lead.
  • STU battled to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth inning, Fernandez led off the inning with a double and scored on a Vazquez RBI single to right-field.
  • Later in the inning, Vazquez scored the tying run on yet another wild pitch, bringing the score to 5-5.
  • Barry once again took the lead in the top of the eighth, scoring on an RBI double to left field. 
  • Izquierdo tied the game for the Bobcats with a one-out single to center-field, scoring Fernandez and knotting the score at 6-6.
  • In the top of the tenth inning, BU added two more runs to take their final lead of the game, 8-6.
  • St. Thomas was able to load the bases in the bottom half of the tenth inning but lined into a game-ending double play to squash the comeback attempt and lost, 8-6.


Upcoming
No. 2 STU travels to West Palm Beach, Fla. to play (RV) Keiser, as Sun Conference play begins on Friday, February 14. The series is three games and begins with a 2 p.m. first pitch from Silvester Field.
