BOBCATS LOSE DOUBLEHEADER TO REDHAWKS

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (February 14, 2020) - St. Thomas University (STU) Softball (0-6) dropped a doubleheader against Martin Methodist College (2-0), losing both games (6-4, 5-2) on Friday evening from Colonel Jacquelin Kelly Field.

Game One
Bobcat Starters
Eliza Artiles (Second Base), Tyenna Colon (Shortstop), Deavyn McDade (Designated Player), Ashley Rosado (Pitcher), Rachel Samaniego (Right Field), Lucia Esposito (Catcher), Juliana Uribe (Center Field), Taelor Schmitz (Left Field), Dayma Pla (Catcher), Sarah Descheene (Third Base)

Game Notes
  • Rosado got the starting nod in game one of the doubleheader for St. Thomas and worked around a one-out double to not allow a run.
  • Artiles led-off the game with a single and steal, scoring on an error by the Redhawks third baseman, as STU took a 1-0 lead.
  • Rosado followed the bunt, helping herself out, recording a double and bringing in McDade.
  • Rosado recorded a shutdown inning, recording a strikeout in the top of the second inning.
  • STU got back on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning. 
  • Colon opened the inning with a single and scored on a McDade double.
  • Kally Martin entered the game as a pinch runner, replacing McDade and scored on a Samaniego groundout.
  • MMC cut the Bobcats lead in half by hitting back-to-back home runs, putting the score at 4-2.
  • The score remained deadlocked until the top of the seventh inning, Martin Methodist led-off with a solo home run and tied the game with a Bobcats error.
  • In the bottom of the seventh inning, STU went down in order, sending the game into extra innings.
  • MMC scored two more runs in the top of the eighth inning, recording their fourth home run of the game and putting the score at 6-4.
  • STU stranded runners on first and third, ending the game with a 6-4 loss.

Game Notes
  • Winter made her third start of the season for St. Thomas, throwing her first complete game of the season. 
  • MMC scored three runs in the top of the first inning, capitalizing on two Bobcat errors and taking a 3-0 lead.
  • Winter worked around a hit-by-pitch in the second inning and held the Redhawks scoreless.
  • Martin Methodist scored their fourth run of the game in the third inning, on an RBI double.
  • MMC took a 5-0 lead by scoring on an RBI single in the fifth inning.
  • STU got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning, as the Bobcats began their rally.
  • McDade led the inning off with a hit-by-pitch; Esposito followed with a single; Schmitz walked, loading the bases and the Bobcats scored on a Hauck RBI single.
  • Schmitz added the second run of the inning on a wild pitch, cutting the lead to 5-2.
  • STU stranded runners on first and second, bringing the tying run to the plate and dropped the second game of the doubleheader, 5-2.
