LATE RALLY COMES UP SHORT FOR BOBCATS AT DAY ONE OF THE PFX SPRING GAMES

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (February 28, 2020) – The St. Thomas University Softball team (2-7, 0-0) traveled up the state of Florida to start spring break at THE PFX Spring Games at the Fortune Road Athletics Complex. The Bobcats took on the Cougars of Spring Arbor University from Michigan (2-4) for a Friday afternoon match-up. The Cougars took the game with a final score of 6-4.

Game Notes:
  • Winter recorded her fourth start on the mound as a Bobcat going four and a third with two strikeouts.
  • The Cougars struck first in the top of the first scoring two runs capitalizing off two Bobcat errors.
  • St. Thomas' offense got going in the top of the second as the bases were loaded with no outs, but Spring Arbor got Schmitz to pop up the right fielder and the Williams ground into a double-play. To end the inning.
  • Spring Arbor extended their lead to 6-0 with a four-run bottom half of the fifth.
  • Abbigail Smith came into relief for an inning and two-thirds in the middle of the fifth.
  • Smith came in and threw a score frame only giving up three hits and recording one strikeout.
  • The Bobcats had a big top of the sixth as they cut the Cougar lead to two.
  • Samaniego walked and scored off a Rosado double to start the inning.
  • Artiles then singled to left field and brought home Rosado to make it 6-2.
  • Hauck then singled down first base to continue to push the offense with just one away.
  • With some crafty baserunning, Artiles recorded two stolen bases and Hauck moved to third to put herself in perfect scoring position.
  • Williams came up and caused some defensive chaos for Spring Arbor, getting Hauck to score and bring the score to 6-4.
  • Ashley Rosado hit a two-out double to try and spark a seven-inning rally but it fell just short.
