THOMPSON RAKES #2 BOBCATS TO SWEEP OVER ROYALS

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (February 29, 2020) - No. 2 St. Thomas University (STU) Bobcats Baseball (13-3, 5-0 TSC) completed a three-game sweep against Warner University (6-16, 0-6 TSC) winning both games of a Saturday doubleheader from Paul Demie Mainieri Field. Game one of the afternoon went the Bobcats way, with STU winning 11-3 and St. Thomas sealed the series sweep, winning 7-2 in the series finale.

Game Notes
  • Warner began the game with two consecutive hits, plating the first run of the game, and taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
  • Andrew closed the opening frame by recording two strikeouts but allowed two runs.
  • The flame-throwing right-hander settled into a groove in the second inning, working around a two-out walk. 
  • STU got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the second inning, with Thompson working a lead-off walk. 
  • Thompson scored on a Royals' error, cutting the deficit in half, 2-1.
  • Vazquez followed with an RBI single to right field, driving in Martinez and tying the game 2-2.
  • Guerra plated Estevez with a fielder's choice, giving STU the lead, 3-2.
  • Andrew tallied three more strikeouts in the top of the third inning, however, allowed the tying run to score on a wild pitch.
  • St. Thomas added two runs in the bottom of the third, Daniel Lowry scored on a wild pitch and Thompson came in on an RBI groundout, taking a 5-3 lead.
  • Andrew recorded back-to-back strikeouts, giving the Bobcats a much-needed shutdown inning. 
  • Guerra plated Martinez, with a two-out RBI single to right-center field, as STU lead 6-3 after five innings. 
  • Freshman, Luis Gonzalez entered for the Bobcats in the top of the sixth inning, recording a 1-2-3 inning. 
  • After two quick outs in the bottom of the sixth, Rivero launched his second home run of the season, tying the team lead and extending the lead to 7-3.
  • STU stole a run in the bottom of the seventh inning, as Thompson scored, while Martinez swiped second. 
  • Gonzalez finished his day with two strikeouts in the top of the eighth.
  • Fernandez hit a bases-clearing double in the bottom of the eighth inning, scoring three runs and putting the Bobcats ahead, 11-3.
  • Felipe Soto closed the game, recording the final three outs, including two strikeouts, as STU clinched a series win.

  • Touron made his first start for St. Thomas in the series finale, a change from his usual closer-role, and began the game with back-to-back strikeouts.
  • STU wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, Thompson lined a single to right-center field, bringing in Lopez and giving the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.
  • WU scored two runs in the top of the third inning, before Touron escaped the jam with consecutive strikeouts. 
  • The Bobcats tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning as Lopez brought in Perdomo on a sacrifice fly.
  • Warner made an error, which resulted in two St. Thomas runs, gave the Bobcats a 4-2 advantage, as Lowry and Guerra scored. 
  • Touron added two more strikeouts to his ledger in the fifth inning, setting the Royals down in order.
  • Two consecutive hits from Thompson and Izquierdo kick-started the bottom of the fifth inning; Thompson came into score on a wild pitch to give STU a 5-2 lead.
  • Touron picked up his final two strikeouts, closing the book on a dominant first start for the Bobcats, lasting six innings and striking out ten.
  • Thompson singled through the right-side of the infield, brining in Martinez and Rivero, extending the STU lead to 7-2.
  • Perez Nichols entered in relief of Touron in the seventh inning and allowed two base-runners but no runs. 
  • Jason Grana pitched the final two innings, recording three strikeouts and sealing the series sweep over the Royals.
