BOBCATS DROP A TOUGH ONE ON THE ROAD AGAINST GYRENES

AVE MARIA, Fla. (October 13, 2021) – The St. Thomas University (STU) Women's Volleyball team (13-6, 6-2 SUN) fell to the Ave Maria University Gyrenes (13-7, 5-3 SUN) is a well fought four set battle on the road Wednesday night. Ave Maria took sets one, two and four 25-18, 27-25, 25-22, respectively. While St. Thomas took set three 26-24.

Match Notes
  • The last time these two teams met, St. Thomas swept the Gyrenes 3-0 from the Fernandez Family Center.
  • Bianca Grassi came into the match wining her fifth SUN Defender of the Week honor.
  • The first set seemed to be all in favor the Gyrenes as they hit a match high .462 as a team.
  • Ave Maria went on a 10-2 run to close out the first set.
  • The second set was more evenly matched as both teams hit over .200.
  • A couple of Bobcat errors fell in favor of the Gyrenes that gave them the edge to take the set 27-25.
  • Set three was a big turnaround set for St. Thomas.
  • The back-and-forth battle helped guide them to a 26-24 set win.
  • After starting down 8-2 at the start of the set, St. Thomas slowly worked their way back into it and went on to take the lead 17-16 after a 15-8 run.
  • The Bobcats were a point away from being swept but resilience kicked in and the team went on a 4-0 run to take the set.
  • Tyran Chenault had three of the last four points with two blocks and a forcing set-winning kill.
  • St. Thomas used the third set momentum to work their way onto in the fourth set.
  • More costly errors in the end would result to the fall of the match to Ave Maria as they worked their way back on top.
  • St. Thomas is now tied in the standings with Florida Memorial University, 6-2, for the top spot.

St. Thomas will return home to take on Warner University on Saturday afternoon from the Fernandez Family Center at 2 p.m.
