BOBCAT WRESTLING GETS FIRST UPSET VICTORY IN PROGRAM HISTORY AT KEISER DUALS

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (December 17, 2021) – The St. Thomas University Bobcats Wrestling team split at the Keiser Duals on Saturday morning hosted by Keiser University in the Student Life Center. The dual featured two opponents mentioned in the latest NAIA Wrestling Coaches Top-25 Poll. Thomas More University came in ranked 18th while Keiser University began receiving votes.

Thomas More Dual – #18 Thomas More 48, St. Thomas 6
  • The Bobcats dropped a tough one with the only victory coming by forfeit in the 165-bout for Jessiah Garcia-Contreras.
  • Gianni Guerriero had a close match in the 149-weight class picking up three takedowns but fell by decision 13-8.
  • Thomas More picked up six-pins, a major decision, a tech-fall, and a decision to take the match 48-6.
 
Keiser Dual – (RV) Keiser 19, St. Thomas 30
  • The Bobcats recorded wins by one decision, two falls, a forfeit, a major decision, and a tech-fall.
  • Keiser opened the match with a major decision victory in the 125-weight class.
  • St. Thomas would then go on to win four straight bouts to take a 21-4 lead.
  • Omar Corrales took the 133-weight class by forfeit.
  • David Pierson got right back on track in the 141-weight class starting the match with a takedown and four nearfall points.
  • Pierson had a 12-2 lead in the third before getting the pin at 6:03.
  • Christian Espinoza continued the spark Pierson started with opening his match at 157 with a takedown and two nearfall points.
  • Espinoza closed the first period with a pin at the 2:43 mark.
  • Noel Fuentes kept it going winning by decision, 6-4.
  • Fuentes picked up a reversal after choosing bottom in the second period, he also picked up a takedown and two nearfall points in the third period.
  • Christian Cobo and Jessiah Garcia-Contreras picked up the final two wins that put the Bobcats ahead for good.
  • Cobo won by major decision, 13-5, recording two takedown and a two-point nearfall in the first period to get out to a 6-0 lead.
  • Cobo ended the match with a strong third period getting a reversal and two takedowns.
  • Garcia-Contreras continues to carry the 184-weight class improving to 7-2 on the year.
  • The junior had an impressive first period with a takedown and back-to-back four nearfall points getting a 10-0 lead.
  • In the second period it took 12-seconds to get a takedown and another four-point nearfall and the match was called on a tech-fall finish as Garcia-Contreras took a 16-0 advantage.
  • Keiser finished the match with two pins in the 197 and 285-weight classes.
  • This is the first upset victory for the program taking down a receiving votes team.
