BOBCATS SHUTOUT LIONS FOR SECOND WIN

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (February 20, 2021) - St. Thomas University (STU) Women's Flag Football (2-0, 1-0 TSC) continued to make "her-story" defeating Florida Memorial University (0-1, 0-1 TSC) 23-0, in a mercy-rule, on Saturday afternoon from Bobcat Field.

St. Thomas began the game with the ball, starting on the home 14-yard line. Facing a third-and-15, following a sack, Jada Graham (10/31, 1 TD/1INT; 9 carries/77yards/TD) rushed for the first down and converted for the Bobcats. STU ended their first drive of the game with a punt, as FMU took over possession at the St. Thomas 22-yard line. Florida Memorial's first drive with a three-and-out, returning the ball to the Bobcats. Graham added to her total, rushing for 26-yards on the first play of the possession as St. Thomas reached mid-field. Graham completed back-to-back passes to Tiffany Walker, totaling 10-yards, but STU was unable to score on the drive, leaving the score at 0-0.

Florida Memorial brought the ball into the second quarter, and Dejonice Parris intercepted the pass and bringing the ball back to St. Thomas. Graham connected with Kayla Alvarez on a 13-yard completion, getting the ball across midfield for a first down. The Bobcats were unable to convert a first down, as Florida Memorial reclaimed possession. Erianece Wilson ended the drive, intercepting the second pass of the afternoon and giving STU the ball at midfield. St. Thomas had consecutive chunk plays, as Graham found Walker for 15-yards and then ran for a 20-yard gain, giving STU the ball on the Lions' one yard-line. Graham ran into the endzone as the Bobcats got on the board, putting the score at 7-0 after a successful conversion attempt.

In the final minute of the second quarter, Ferradaz intercepted a pass and returned it 15-yards, across the 40-yard line. St. Thomas went into halftime, leading 7-0 over Florida Memorial.

FMU opened the second half with possession and was forced to punt, following a sack from Gabriella Santaeugenia. Miranda Ferradaz tossed a ball to Mayerli Cayon on a reverse during the punt, who scored from 33-yards out and gave St. Thomas a 15-0 lead. Graham connected with Destynne Francois on the point-after-attempt, extending the St. Thomas lead to 16-0.

Later in the third quarter, STU added another touchdown, as Graham found Samylia Ward on a 10-yard touchdown to give the Bobcats a 23-0 lead after Francois added a successful conversion. 

The inaugural Flag Football "Battle of Miami Gardens" ended in a mercy-rule, as St. Thomas earned a 23-0 shutout victory over the Lions.

St. Thomas travels to Babson Park, Fla. to take on Webber International University in Sun Conference action on Saturday, February 27, at 2 p.m. The Bobcats will complete the overtime period from the February 13 matchup before the game.
