#4 BOBCATS ROUT LIONS IN 2021 HOME OPENER

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (February 9, 2021) - No. 4 St. Thomas University (STU) Bobcats Baseball (1-3) took on cross-town rival Florida Memorial University (2-0) in the "Battle of Miami Gardens" in the 2021 home opener on Tuesday evening from Paul Demie Mainieri Field.

Game Notes

  • Florida Memorial started the game with a lead-off single and quickly tallied the game's first run with an RBI single two batters later.
  • The Lions rally ended there as Machado prevented FMU from scoring again.
  • Lopez led off the bottom of the first inning with a double to left field, and promptly scored on an RBI single from Rangel.
  • In the second inning, Florida Memorial added a second run, scoring on an RBI single and reclaiming the lead, 2-1.
  • A. Fernandez launched his first home run of the season in the bottom of the second inning, tying the game 2-2.
  • Jose Ledesma entered the game in the top of the third inning for STU and threw the first shutout inning of the game.
  • Rivero came into score on a fielding error by the Lions, giving the Bobcats their first lead of the game, 3-2.
  • Ledesma settled into a groove on the mound for STU, striking out five in two innings, including four-in-a-row, and the side in the top of the fourth inning.
  • Fernando Medina, recently called up from the developmental team, made his STU debut.
  • Medina recorded a 1-2-3 inning, including two strikeouts.
  • The game remained 3-2, in favor of the Bobcats, until the top of the sixth inning, when FMU tied the game with back-to-back doubles.
  • In the top of the sixth, Christian Dearman entered the game with two runners on base.
  • After loading the bases, Dearman escaped the jam without allowing any runs and preserved the 3-3 tie.
  • Back-to-back hits from R. Fernandez and A. Fernandez, followed by a walk by Mondejar, loaded the bases for Khawly.
  • Khawly cleared the bases by lacing a double down the left-field line, giving St. Thomas a 6-3 lead over FMU.
  • Later in the inning, Khawly scored on a Lions throwing error, bringing the score to 7-3.
  • STU capped off the inning with a fifth run as Lopez brought in Lowry with an RBI groundout.
  • Dearman continued his momentum on the mound after escaping a bases-loaded jam in the top of the sixth inning by adding two more strikeouts in the top of the seventh. 
  • Luis Gonzalez came into the game to relieve Dearman with the bases loaded and got out of the inning with a pop-out.
  • STU added to the lead with a sacrifice fly from A. Fernandez, plating Rivero and putting the score at 9-3.
  • Khawly added to his total with a second RBI double, bringing in Erik Estevez.
  • Lowry followed with an RBI double of his own, plating Khawly and Orlando Borroto, and putting the score at 12-3.
  • STU ended the game via run-rule with a run scoring on an error in the bottom of the eighth inning, beating the Lions 13-3.
