#12 BOBCATS COMEBACK TO BEAT CONQUISTADORS

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (March 19, 2021) - No. 12 St. Thomas University (STU) Bobcats Baseball (17-9) swept a Friday doubleheader against the Florida National University Conquistadors from Paul Demie Mainieri Field. In game one of the doubleheader, No. 12, STU defeated the Conquistadors 6-4 and completed the Friday evening by winning 3-2.

  • After allowing a lead-off single, J. Rivero settled in and held FNU off the scoreboard in the top of the first.
  • The Conquistadors loaded the bases after starting the second inning with two outs and scored the first two runs of the game with an RBI single.
  • Mantrana recorded his first RBI of the 2021 campaign, bringing in A. Rivero with an RBI single to right field.
  • Florida National responded with its third run of the game in the top of the third inning, putting the score at 3-1 following an RBI double.
  • FNU extended its lead to 4-1 with another RBI double in the top of the fourth inning, 
  • A. Fernandez tallied his second hit of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning, igniting an STU rally. 
  • Schoeller was hit by a pitch, and Mantrana followed with a walk, loading the bases for the pinch-hitter, Orlando Borroto. 
  • Borroto singled to deep right field, scoring Schoeller and Franco, which put the score at 4-3.
  • Fernando Medina kept FNU off the scoreboard in the top of the fifth, preserving a 4-3 St. Thomas advantage.
  • Erik Estevez pinch-hit for the Bobcats in the bottom of the fifth inning with the bases loaded, lining a single to center-field and giving STU its first lead of the game, 5-4.
  • Joel Franco drove in an insurance run for St. Thomas, bringing in Montesino and extending the Bobcat lead to 6-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning.
  • Jason Grana entered in relief in the seventh inning, recording his first save of the 2021 season, as STU closed a 6-4 victory over Florida National.

  • Florida National took the first lead of the game, capitalizing on two STU errors in the top of the first inning.
  • After recording two consecutive outs to start the top of the second inning, FNU put runners on second and third base, looking to extend its lead.
  • Pino escaped the jam with a swinging strikeout.
  • The Bobcats loaded the bases in the bottom of the second inning but were unable to capitalize, remaining down, 1-0.
  • STU had another opportunity to score in the bottom of the third inning but stranded runners at second and third base.
  • Pino settled into a groove, retiring 11 straight Conquistadors, before allowing a one-out double in the top of the sixth inning. 
  • FNU broke through with three consecutive hits, extending the lead to 2-0. 
  • Borroto started a Bobcat rally with a single to right field and advanced to scoring position on an error by FNU.
  • Mantrana followed with a hit of his own, putting two runners in scoring position for the pinch-hitter Montesino.
  • Montesino lined a double into the left-center field gap, scoring both runs, and tying the game 2-2.
  • Franco gave the Bobcats their first lead of the game with an RBI single to right field, putting the score a 3-2.
  • Jose Ledesma entered in relief for STU in the top of the seventh inning and sealed the win.
  • The doubleheader sweep puts Head Coach Jorge Perez tied atop the St. Thomas University leaderboard for wins. The Bobcat skipper is now tied with STU Hall of Famer Manny Mantrana (451).
