#12 BOBCATS STRUGGLE IN MID-WEEK ACTION

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (March 23, 2021) – No. 12 St. Thomas University (STU) Bobcats Baseball team (20-10) fell in both halves of a non-conference doubleheader against the Ave Maria University Gyrenes (10-20) on Tuesday evening from Paul Demie Mainieri Field. No. 12 STU dropped game one 6-4 and game two 6-5.

Game Notes

  • Both teams were held off the scoreboard for the first three innings of the game.
  • After Touron recorded the first out in the top of the fourth inning, back-to-back Gyrenes reached base.
  • Touron was relieved by David Armstrong. Touron's final line sat at: 3.1 IP, two strikeouts, three walks and two hits allowed.
  • The Bobcats made an error in the top of the third inning, which allowed the Gyrenes to plate their first run of the contest.
  • AMU opened the top of the fifth inning with three consecutive singles, loading the bases as the Bobcats turned to Jason Grana.
  • Ave Maria extended its lead to 4-0 with a bases-clearing triple.
  • The Gyrenes tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth inning, taking a 6-0 lead after a two-run single.
  • Mondejar and Thompson recorded consecutive singles to open the bottom of the fifth inning for STU, as the bases were loaded following a hit-by-pitch by Lopez.
  • Rangel brought in the first STU run with the second hit-by-pitch of the inning, leaving the bases loaded for Rivero.
  • Rivero singled over a leaping third baseman, plating Lopez and Thompson, as the Bobcats inched closer, putting the score at 6-3.
  • R. Fernandez followed with a single to right field, bringing the score to 6-4.
  • Jose Machado entered into the game for St. Thomas.
  • After allowing a lead-off single, AMU attempted to sacrifice the runner to second base. Rangel's heads-up defensive play caught the baserunner headed to third, and STU turned a needed double play.
  • With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the sixth inning, Rivero skied a fly ball to center; however, the Bobcats were doubled-off, ending the threat and keeping the score at 6-4.              
  • Machado retired the side in order in the seventh inning, giving the 12th ranked Bobcats one last chance to come back.
  • STU went down with three consecutive groundballs, dropping the doubleheader's first game, 6-4.

  • Coipel allowed a lead-off single to start the game but quickly neutralized the threat with a double-play turn with Lopez.
  • Coipel finished the inning with his first strikeout of the contest.
  • With two outs in the bottom of the second, Mondejar lined a double to left field, scoring Borroto and giving STU a 1-0 lead.
  • Back-to-back hits by the Gyrenes tied the game 1-1 in the top of the third inning.
  • Khawly reclaimed the Bobcat advantage in the bottom of the third
