#13 BOBCATS FALL TO #11 EAGLES IN NAIA OPENING ROUND

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (May 17, 2021) - Third-seed St. Thomas University (STU) Bobcats Baseball (33-20) lost 4-3 in game two of the Montgomery Bracket of the NAIA National Championship Opening round to second-seed and host Faulkner University (36-9) from Harrison Field on Monday evening.

Game Notes

  • Ledesma, making his first start of the season, retired the Eagles in order to open the game.
  • Estevez led off the top of the second inning with his second home run of the season to give STU an early 1-0 lead.
  • Faulkner started the bottom of the second inning with three consecutive hits, quickly tying the game 1-1.
  • Following a lead-off single in the bottom of the third inning by Sam Anthony, Mondejar caught him stealing and prevented Anthony from getting his 33rd stolen base of the season.
  • Faulkner added a second run with a lead-off home run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
  • Rivero and Mondejar recorded back-to-back hits to start the sixth inning for STU. 
  • Rivero scored on a wild pitch, tying the game 2-2.
  • Schoeller lined a single to center field and scored Joel Franco, reclaiming the lead for the Bobcats 3-2.
  • Joel Rivero relieved Ledesma in the top of the sixth inning.
  • The Eagles added two runs in the inning to take a 4-3 lead over St. Thomas.
  • Fernando Medina entered to pitch for STU and escaped a bases-loaded jam to keep the score at 4-3.
  • The Bobcats could not rally in the top of the ninth inning, and fell 4-3 to the second-seeded Eagles.

The Bobcats will take on fifth-seed Our Lady of the Lake University (Tx.) in an elimination game on Tuesday morning from Harrison Field.
