MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (January 29, 2022) – The St. Thomas University Wrestling team took a trip to Georgia to take on a pair of ranked opponents on Saturday. The first dual was against second ranked Life University in which the Bobcats fell 48-3. The second dual recorded the Bobcats second ever win against a ranked opponent, both coming this season. St. Thomas defeated receiving votes, Brewton Parker College on their home mat, 28-25.

Jessiah Garcia-Contreras and
Noah Horst were the lone two to get wins against no. 2 Life. Garcia Contreras got an early takedown that gave him the 2-0 advantage, Bryan Canedo then escaped to bring the match 2-1. To start the second period, Garcia-Contreras deferred to Canedo choice, he chose bottom and tied the match up with an escape. In the third period, Garcia-Contreras elected to choose bottom and used a big reversal to take the lead and the match 4-2.

Noah Horst got his big win in the extra matches taking on Jordan Mitchell in the 149-bout. Horst collected the first points with a takedown; Mitchell then quickly tied it back up with a reversal putting the match at two all. Horst was able to escape and take the lead 3-2 into the second period. Horst went on to outscore Mitchell 8-0 over the final two periods.

David Pierson was the other Bobcat that had a close match in the Life Dual. Pierson fell in the final period on an escape and stalling warning point.

In the dual against Brewton Parker College, St. Thomas picked up five wins, four in a row from the 141-bout to the 165-bout.
Maximo Fernandez got the big win that put STU on top in the end.

Kade Clute and Noel Fuentes all picked up a big six-points for STU. Pierson picked up a pin in just 31 seconds over Bradley Owens. Horst got his pin in the first period as well in a minute and 29-seconds. Clute and Fuentes both had forfeit victories.
Maximo Fernandez had the deciding factor match picking up the win by a major decision 8-0 to give St. Thomas the edge with the four team points.
