MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (February 26, 2022) – The St. Thomas University (STU) Women's Flag Football team (3-1, 2-1 SUN) earned a momentous win in overtime against Thomas University (3-1, 2-1 SUN), 7-6, in what was a phenomenal defensive game for both teams. The Bobcats give the Nighthawks their first loss of the season.
Â
This was the first meeting between the two teams as Thomas is a first-year program. This also marked the second overtime game played by the Bobcats.
Â
Although the game was scoreless for 48 minutes of play, there was still many key plays that happened that led to the overtime victory. The first one came from
Anquincia Jones who had a red-zone interception to end the first quarter and kill the Nighthawks offense momentum.
Â
St. Thomas had a couple of breakaway plays, but nothing that was significant enough to break the scoreboard.
Holly Neher started out the game going a perfect four-for-four in the quarterback position.
Destynne Francois was the open target for Neher as the two connected eight times for a total of 33-yards.
Â
Dejonice Parris and
Mayerli Cayon highlighted the defensive end. Cayon recorded a team-high 9.5 flag pulls while Parris had the three biggest plays of the game. Jones and
Rayonna Baker collected the only interceptions of the contest.
Â
The fourth quarter took every play on defense to force overtime. Thomas seemed to gain some momentum to open up as they found themselves in the red-zone quickly to open the quarter. After a Bobcat timeout to slow down the game, Baker quickly turned the game around getting an interception and giving the offense back the ball.
Â
The Nighthawk defense continued to shut down the Bobcats not giving them room for the big play that would change the game. This continued to out the game in the hands of the defense and Parris stepped up big. In the final TU drive, the junior had a sack, a quarterback hurry, and a pass breakup to force overtime.
Â
This is where the star of the game
Tyler Bryant came into play. Bryant only had two receptions leading into overtime. The veteran sophomore was patient and knew her time would come and it did. Neher connected with Bryant on a 12-yard pass to the back left corner of the end zone to get the touchdown. The two then connected for the crucial extra point.
Â
Dejonice Parris had one last defensive play in her and it was the biggest one denying the Nighthawks their extra point pulling the flag at the one-yard line, crushing the energy out of the Thomas bench.
