STU SPLITS DOUBLE HEADER AGAINST FNU

MIAMI, Fla. (March 1, 2022) – The St. Thomas University Softball team (2-3) got back on track with a double-header against Florida National University (10-4) in midweek action on Tuesday afternoon. Bobcats split the two with the Conquistadors taking game one 1-0 and falling in game two 5-0.

Game One Notes
  • Erica Winter picked up her second win of the season throwing six shutout innings and picking up three strikeouts.
  • Kylie Casanova picked up the lone RBI of the contest scoring Madison Londono in the top of the second.
  • The inning started with single from Maria Barranco.  
  • Sarah Descheene had the sacrifice bunt to move Barranco over and have Londono pinch run.
  • Casanova delivered the single through the right side to score Londono from second.
  • That would be enough for STU to secure the victory as both teams had a solid defense stopping any offensive threats.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Winter worked her way out of a jam, stranding two runners.
  • Hope Quinones came into relief in the bottom of the sixth and was lights out for STU.
  • Quinones picked up two strikeout, two groundouts, and a flyout to retire all six-batters faced.
  • This was the first save for the junior transfer.

Game Two Notes
  • Abbi Smith got the start for the Bobcats in circle for game two.
  • The junior went four innings giving up one earned run and striking out three.
  • Alisha Vohs made her debut behind the plate for her first collegiate game.
  • Vohs did not disappoint going 2-for-2 with a pair of singles.
  • Sarah Descheene also had a good game at the plate going 2-for-3.
  • The Conquistadors scored runs in the bottom of the second and third to take a 2-0 lead.
  • FNU tacked on three more runs in the bottom half of the fifth to solidify their 5-0 victory.
 
Up Next
St. Thomas will travel to Clermont, Fla. to participate in the PFX Spring Games from March 4 -8 taking on various NAIA opponents.
