Electric First Half Leads No. 11 Bobcats to Season Opener Win over Sharks

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (September 4, 2022) - Sunday night marked the the beginning of the 2022 season for the no. 11 St. Thomas University (STU) Men's Soccer team (1-0). The offense picked up right where they left off last season scoring three goals in the first half that led to the 3-0 victory for the Bobcats over NCAA DII reigning runner-up Nova Southeastern University (1-1-2). The Bobcats hold a 2-0-1 advantage over the Sharks in the last three meetings. This was the first win for STU on the new AutoNation Field and Head Coach Feliks Mats 150th career win at the helm of the Men's Soccer program.

  • Fernando Arzeno continues the goal scoring campaign in 2022 knocking down two in the first half for St. Thomas.
  • Felipe Madero worked the ball up the sideline and gave the perfect through ball to Arzeno who had a one-on-one with the goalkeeper and scored from about 10-yards out.
  • Madero quickly joined in on the fun with a goal of his on in the 29th minute.
  • Madero was able to take advantage of a deflected shot and put it back passed the keeper.
  • In the 37th minute, a red card was given to the Nova Southeastern goalkeeper.
  • With the red card, NSU had to play the remaining of the match with a man down.
  • The red card was given since the keeper came in contact with Bobcat, Facundo Cisterna, without any clear intent of going for the ball
  • Arzeno took the penalty kick for St. Thomas struck it to the top left corner.
  • The defensive line built by captain Juan Manuel Collazo, Noah Tolcachier, Nicolas Bertuleit, and Teo Rondon held down the Sharks attack.
  • The four defenders built a wall that NSU was unable to break through.
  • Franco Acerbi got his third straight opening day start in the net and earned the shutout and win.
