MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (October 4, 2023) - The #17 St. Thomas University (STU) Women's Soccer Team pulled out another win on Wednesday evening against Ave Maria University. Three goals from the Bobcats secured the win against the Gyrenes 3-1.
Any early goal from Ave Maria University put the Bobcats on the offensive in the first half. After some back and forth, Ave Maria's Rachel Dalton scored the first goal of the match in the 13th minute. The Bobcats were quick to respond. In the 15th minute, Midfielder Cristina Blaya San Pedro was able to get a shot off, scoring the equalizing goal. This was her first goal of the season. STU went into halftime tied up 1-1.
In the second half, the Bobcats brought the heat. In the 70th minute of the match, Megan Velazquez was able to make her way up to the net, scoring the goal that would put the Bobcats in the lead. This was Velazquez' second goal of the season, scoring her first on Saturday against #11 Keiser University.
The Bobcats were not done working yet. In the 88th minute, Gabrielle Cimino, who is leading in shots this season for STU, was able to get a shot off on a pass from Claudia Rodriguez. This was Cimino's fourth goal in the 2023 season, putting her in the lead for both shots and goals. Cimino notched seven shots during the match against the Gyrenes, putting her season total at 40.
STU held Ave Maria to a lone goal, Isabella Penaranda recording six saves against the Gyrenes. This win marks the Bobcats seventh win of the season, bringing their overall record to 7-1-2 and conference record to 4-1-2.
The Bobcats will stay close to home for their next match, heading down the road to Dr. Lester Brown Park to face Florida Memorial University on Saturday, October 7th at 11 a.m.
