MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (October 7, 2023) - The #17 St. Thomas University (STU) Women's Soccer team traveled down the road to face Florida Memorial University for round two of the Battle of Miami Gardens. The Bobcats were able to secure the win with a late goal, finishing 1-0.Â
Both teams came into the match ready for battle. In the first half, the Lions notched five shots and the Bobcats had 12. The Bobcats had a few attempts at getting on the board, including a big play in the 16th minute that nearly resulted in the first goal before an Offsides call was made. The teams were neck and neck going into halftime with a score of 0-0.Â
As they entered the second half, the Bobcats took it up a notch, recording 13Â more shots against the Lions. It wasn't until the very end of the match that the Bobcats were able to get on the board. Â
The Lions gave it up to the Bobcats in the 88th minute of the game. Claudia Rodriguez took the ball up to the right corner, crossing it to Alexandra Santiago who was able to take her shot against the Lions goalkeeper and put the Bobcats on the board. STU Defense was able to hold the Lions off, finishing the match up by one, once again defeating Florida Memorial in a shutout. Gabrielle Cimino and Megan Velazquez each had great shooting performances during the game, notching six shots each, keeping Cimino in the lead with 46 total shots this season and bringing Velazquez up to number two with 25.Â
This is the third straight win for the Bobcats, putting them at 8-1-2 overall and 5-1-2 in Sun Conference play, with only one loss to #7 SCAD-Savannah. Â
Up next the Bobcats will host #14 Southeastern University on Wednesday, October 11th at 7 p.m. after ending their last match in a draw. The Bobcats will then head to Babson Park, Fla. To face Webber International University on Saturday, October 14th at 7 p.m.Â
