MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (February 4, 2023) – St. Thomas University (STU) Women's Basketball (19-6, 10-3 SUN) continued their 5-game win streak this Saturday, outlasting Sun Conference opponent, College of Coastal Georgia (5-18, 3-10 SUN) 65-54.
In what began as a defensive showing by both teams early on, the Mariners broke the ice first with a pair of free throws early in the quarter. The Bobcat's own Brooke Bogatz tied things up at 4-4 after a beautiful finish around the rim. Coastal Georgia would then go on a 12-1 run late in the first quarter to give them a comfortable lead heading into the second quarter.
The second quarter started off just where the first had left off with the Mariners getting easy bucket in the paint, extending the lead to 19-11 in favor of Coastal Georgia. The Bobcats quickly rally back as Mya Moye connects on her open layup attempt, giving STU their first lead since early in the first quarter. The momentum of the 10-0 run would carry the team through the remainder of the half, entering the intermission 33-30 with the Bobcats trailing by 3.
A few seconds into the third quarter, Mya Moye finishes what she started, knocking down the first three-pointer of the night for the Bobcats as STU ties it up. St. Thomas would go on to hit all 4 of their three-point shots in the third quarter still trailing by a point heading into the final quarter of regulation.
A pair of early steals by Senior Guard, Kasey Gagan, helped the Bobcats take over the fourth quarter as they finally began to find their rhythm. Guard, Marta Franco, was able to capitalize on a pair of mistakes made on the Mariners end, scoring 6 points in the final 3 minutes. In what began as a 3-point Bobcat lead with just under 4 minutes to go in regulation quickly became an 11-point conference win for St. Thomas University.
