MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (August 31, 2023)- The St. Thomas University (STU) Football team is set for their week two opponent, Division I Stetson University. The Bobcats will be on the road in Deland, Fla. for a kickoff time of 6 pm.
Â
In week one STU started fast and never looked back, defeating the Fort Lauderdale Eagles 70-14. Many members of the team saw some time, with both sides of the ball impressing. Sophomore QB Keeley Watson, and Junior QB
Ty'Quan Wiggins both looked great in the season debut. Watson was 4-6 with 70 yards and 1 touchdown, and Wiggins was 2-4 with 94 yards as well as a touchdown.
Â
With as much production on offense the Bobcats had, the ground game impressed the most. One of the nation's best rushers
Rontavious Farmer got started exactly where he left off. Farmer carried the ball 17 times, rushing for 141 yards and 4 touchdowns. RB 2 was a question for Rychel and the team, but
Ashton Davis stepped up after
Samir English-Brown went down and excelled. Davis toted the rock 13 times going for 86 yards and a touchdown.
Â
The old reliable receiving core was back at it again, with
Khalitri Zow leading the way with 2 receptions for 94 yards and a touchdown.
David Hayes also had some highlight reel plays, as he went on to catch 2 throws going for 53 yards along with a touchdown on a drive that was thrown to him three times to get into the red zone.
Â
On the other side of the ball, the Bobcat defense was all over the field. Sophomore
D'Andre Lake had a monster game racking up 2 sacks, 2 tackles for loss, and 6 total tackles. Veteran
Willie Webb Jr. also was all over the place, tallying 7 total tackles, with two tackles for loss. Nick Engler,
Omilio Savage,
Lionel Turene, and
Kahlill Bryan all picked up their first sack on the year.
Â
This will be the first game of the 2023 season for the Stetson University Hatters. With the Hatters not seeing game action yet, STU will look to take advantage of that and jump on them early. Stetson averaged 27.9 points per game in 2022, with their opponents averaging 28.5. Their offense averages 85.5 yards per game on the ground, and 295.9 per game in the air, totaling 381.4 of total offense per game.
Â
On the defensive side of the ball the Hatters had a total of 19 sacks, 61 tackles for loss, 18 interceptions, and 25 QB hurries. With the experience this big and tough offensive line the Bobcats have, the Hatters will have some work to do in the trenches. When you look at the experience this STU team has especially after giving Division 1 Butler a run for their money last year, look for this game to be competitive and hard fought till the end. Â Â
