PRESCOTT, Ariz. (August 30, 2023) - As the clock struck midnight on the east coast Wednesday evening, the St. Thomas University (STU) Women's Soccer Team (2-0) took down no. 9 Embry Riddle Aeronautical University-Arizona (2-2) on the road 3-2. Two second half goals and a locked down defensive performance powered the Bobcats to victory.
ERAU started the night with two first half goals and all the momentum. St. Thomas' Alexandra Acevado was able to get one in the back of the net before the half ended heading into the half just down by one.
With 45 minutes remaining, STU would have to come back from the half and tighten up the defense and execute on the offensive end. The team did just that.
The graduate transfer, Gabrielle Cimino scored her second goal of the season to tie the game up at two all in the 56th minute. Cimino has now scored a goal in each of the first two contest.
In the 69th minute, the momentum shifted in Prescott as Bryanna Alzate launched a 30-yard miracle shot off a free kick rebound that hit spot on in the top right corner.
Alzate and Acevado each notched three points with a goal and assist. Nayelis Gil held it down in the net with nine saves playing all 90 minutes for her first complete game.
St. Thomas knocks off a top-10 team for the first time since 2021 when the Bobcats took down Keiser in the Sun Conference Semifinals. This is also the first 2-0 start since 2021.
STU will come home and rest before taking on Florida National in their home opener on Tuesday, September 5 at AutoNation Field at 5 p.m.
