MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (September 5, 2023) - The St. Thomas University (STU) Women's Soccer Team (3-0) took Florida National University (0-2) during their Tuesday evening home opener, 1-0. Megan Farrell scored her first goal as a Bobcat early in the second half to lock in the win. Â
The Bobcats dominated the first half both offensively and defensively, with 13 shots while holding the Conquistadors to just one shot. Forward, Gabrielle Cimino, led the charge with three shots on goal in the first half, and following her lead were Captains Leslie Deleon and Megan Velazquez who each recorded a shot on goal of their own during the first half.Â
Goalkeeper, Isabella Penaranda, had her first start of the 2023 season and proved to be a powerhouse in goal, spending time in and out of the net protecting the Bobcats. Penaranda is only in her sophomore season but showed the growth in her game over the course of the year, directing the defense.
As the Bobcats entered the second half, they knew they had to capitalize in order to pull out a win. They entered this half feeling composed, ready to play through the clock. Less than 10 minutes in, they had a point on the board.Â
Senior, Megan Farrell, was in the right place at the right time. Farrell set herself up to catch a rebound off a block from the goalie, and seconds later she had controlled the ball and struck it into the back of the net, putting the Bobcats up 1-0 against FNU. Â
STU spent the remainder of the game keeping FNU from conquering their half of the pitch. The Bobcats held the Conquistadors to one shot in the second half before closing out regulation. This win keeps their undefeated streak alive, making STU's overall record 3-0.Â
The Bobcats will take a week off before they open Sun Conference play against Webber International next Wednesday, September 13 at AutoNation Field at 7 p.m.Â
