BABSON PARK, Fla. (September 13, 2023) – A new face in goal did not change the defensive presence as the no. 6 St. Thomas University (STU) Men's Soccer team (3-0-1, 1-0-0 SUN) picks up their first shutout of the year. The Bobcats opened Sun Conference play on Wednesday afternoon with a trip up to the orange groves to take on Webber International University (1-3-1, 0-1-0). The 2-0 victory extends an 11-match win streak against the Warriors dating back to 2014.Â
Noel Brieden got his Bobcat debut in the net and did not disappoint recording a clean sheet with four saves. Brieden and the Bobcat defense held the Warriors to just one shot in the first half.
Guido Cacciabue and Osaghea Oghogho continue to lead the offensive charge as they split the goal scoring and are tied as team leaders at three each. Cacciabue got it started first in the 19th minute with a left footed shot after a chest touch in the box past the keeper on a chip from Tomas Persico.
Oghogho wasted no time adding insure just three minutes later in the 22nd minute. STU worked the ball upfield where defender Niklas Hoener came up from the backline to deliver the assist. Hoener places it perfectly to the feet of Oghogho inside the six-yard box where he used his momentum to blast it into the back of the net.
St. Thomas starts Sun Conference play off on the right foot as they seek to bring the crown back to Miami Gardens. The journey continues on Saturday, September 16 as STU heads back home to AutoNation Field and welcomes the Warner Royals.
