HARDEEVILLE, SC. (September 27, 2023)- The St. Thomas University (STU) Men's Soccer team added yet another one to the win column, defeating SCAD- Savanah by a score of 6-3. A strong offensive effort from the Bobcats in the second half never gave the Bees a chance to get back into this one.
Â
STU got pressure early, with
Guido Cacciabue and
Angelo Bernandes getting early scoring opportunities in the first minute and a half. Bobcat keeper
Franco Acerbi was also tested early, having to make a routine save to keep it scoreless. The early offensive pressure paid off for STU just under seven minutes into the game, when
Angelo Bernandes received a pass from
Charlie Bwanika putting it in the net. This would be the first of three for Bernandes on the night.
Â
Keeping the pressure on the Bees, the Bobcats were able to take three shots in a minute, two of those having to put the SCAD keeper to work. With just over four minutes to play in the opening half,
Guido Cacciabue sent a pass to
Noah Tolcachier who put STU up two making no mistakes. A late corner kick by the Bobcats wouldn't amount to anything, ending the half with a 2-0 lead.
Â
The second half started with the Bees making an expected push and trying to claw back into the game. Just when you thought SCAD was going to make a push,
Angelo Bernandes put his second one in the back of the net, and the Bobcats were in total control. Two minutes later however the Bees were able to make something happen and cut into the STU lead with a goal of their own (3-1). The game was getting intense with a handful of yellow cards being given.
Â
With SCAD on their heels,
Hernando Suarez gave STU the three goal lead back at just under the seventieth minute. A few minutes later
Charlie Grieveson took a corner kick, that found the feet of none other than
Angelo Bernandes for his third goal of the contest. That wouldn't be enough for the Bobcats, as they would get yet another goal two minutes later, this time from
Tomas Persico assisted by
Evan Bjerke. SCAD would put up two late goals, but STU would walk away with the 6-3 win in South Carolina.
