Volleyball Fends Off New College Of Florida To Advance To Sun Conference Championship Final

Miami Gardens, Fla. – Finding themselves in unfamiliar territory during Friday afternoon's Sun Conference Championship Semifinal matchup, tied 1 set apiece with fourth-seeded New College of Florida and trailing in the third set, the 10t-ranked and top-seeded St. Thomas Volleyball Team rallied to claim the third frame before winning the fourth to advance to Saturday's Final with a 3-1 (25-17, 18-25, 25-20, 25-10) win.

HOW IT HAPPENED:  

  • Set 1 – After trading the opening 20 points of the contest, the Bobcats scored three-straight to break the stalemate and held the visitors without a run of consecutive points for the duration of the frame. 

  • Set 2 – St. Thomas overcame an early 8-5 deficit to take a 10-9 lead and held onto the advantage until a late 8-0 gave the Mighty Banyans set point at 24-17. 

  • Set 3 – The Bobcats used an 8-1 stretch midway through the third set to create an 11-7 lead, fending off the visitors when they got within one at 14-13 with four-straight points to pull ahead 18-13. 

  • Set 4 – STU quickly created a double-digit advantage at 14-4, extending their lead to 17-4 while holding NFC to just one run of back-to-back points for the rest of the match. 

 
NOTEWORTHY: 

  • Carolina Cruz sparked the offense behind 18 kills on a .400 clip. 

  • Tayla Barnes chipped in 11 kills and four assisted blocks. 

  • Payton Bertke tallied 40 assists and 10 digs for a double-double. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: 

  • The Bobcats ended the match with 59 kills on a .269 hitting percentage versus 33 kills on a .102 clip for the visitor. 

  • STU served five aces while New College of Florida had nine. 

  • St. Thomas tallied three five solo blocks and 14 assisted, NCF logged two solo and 14 assisted. 

  • St. Thomas held a 60-46 advantage in digs.
