Volleyball Wins Third-Straight Sun Conference Tournament Championship

Miami Gardens, Fla. – Taking the best that Southeastern could throw at them in Saturday afternoon's Sun Conference Volleyball Championship Final, the 10th-ranked and top-seeded St. Thomas University overcame a first-frame setback to win their third-straight Tournament Title in a 3-1 (23-25, 25-21, 25-16, 25-17) victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Set 1 – STU jumped out to an early 8-1 advantage and held onto the lead until a 7-1 rally knotted the score 20-all. The Bobcats broke the stalemate with the ensuing point, only for a 4-1 stretch by the Fire forcing set point at 24-22.
  • Set 2 – After trading the opening 24 points of the second stanza, the Bobcats scored three straight and six of the ensuing seven to pull ahead 18-13. STU fended off the visitors for the duration of the set, keeping the lead above three.
  • Set 3 – The Bobcats never trailed in the third set, using a late 6-0 run to extend their advantage to 22-14.
  • Set 4 – St. Thomas scored seven of the initial 10 points of the fourth set to create a 7-3 lead, countering a late comeback effort by the Fire that got them within one at 17-16 with five-straight to push ahead 22-16.

NOTEWORTHY:
  • The 2024 Sun Conference Tournament MVP Sana Dennis boasted 20 kills on a .613 clip while adding one service ace, five assisted blocks and one solo block.
  •  Carolina Cruz tallied a double-double behind 15 kills and 11 digs.
  • Bianca Grassi tallied 24 digs.
  • Payton Bertke dished out 52 assists on top of 11 digs, four assisted blocks and one solo block.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • STU finished the match with 66 kills on a .301 hitting percentage versus 49 kills on a .168 clip for the Fire.
  • St. Thomas served three aces while the visitors tallied one.
  • The Bobcats logged two solo block and 18 assisted, SEU recorded two solo and eight assisted.
  • STU held an 81-66 advantage in digs.
UP NEXT:
The Bobcats await their NAIA Postseason position, having secured a spot as the Sun Conference Automatic Qualifier. Opening Round play is set for Saturday, Nov. 23.
