Next Stop, Iowa! Volleyball Advances To NAIA National Championship Final Site With 3-0 Win Over Florida College

Miami Gardens, Fla. – Hosting an Opening Round match in the 2024 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) on Saturday afternoon, the 10th ranked St. Thomas Volleyball demonstrated why they are one of just two teams in the postseason field undefeated with a commanding 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-15) victory over Florida College.

HOW IT HAPPENED:  

  • Set 1 – Trailing midway through the opening frame 13-11, the Bobcats used a 3-0 run to pull ahead 14-13 before responding to a FC tally that knotted the score with another 3-0 spurt to create aa 17-14 lead. STU held the visitors to three points for the rest of the set. 

  • Set 2 – St. Thomas scored back-to-back points after Florida College took the initial to hold a 2-1 advantage and led for the duration of the second set. The Bobcats limited Florida College to two 3-0 runs down the stretch, countering both with an identical 3-0 spree to prevent the Falcons from clawing into the lead. 

  • Set 3 – The visitors used an early 4-0 run to take a 7-6 lead, holding onto the advantage until a 3-0 STU run made it 12-10. The Bobcats pulled away late at 22-14 behind a 5-0 run, countering a Florida College tally with a match-ending 3-0 spree. 

 
NOTEWORTHY: 

  • The Bobcats advance to the NAIA National Championship Final Site for the second-consecutive season. 

  • Tayla Barnes chipped in one solo block and four assisted. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: 

  • The Bobcats ended the match with 46 kills on a .419 hitting percentage versus 34 kills on a .117 clip for the visitor. 

  • STU served three aces while Florida College had one. 

  • St. Thomas tallied two solo blocks and 14 assisted, FC logged one solo and two assisted. 

  • St. Thomas held a 37-27 advantage in digs.
