Volleyball Opens Pool Play At The NAIA Championship With 3-2 Victory Over McPherson

Sioux City, Iowa. – Finding themselves in the reverse position of where they were a year ago on Wednesday evening, opening playing in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Pool G as the seventh seed taking on the 18th seed, the St. Thomas Bobcats spoiled McPherson's comeback attempt in a 3-2 (25-19, 25-22, 22-25, 21-25, 15-12) triumph.

HOW IT HAPPENED:  

  • Set 1 – St. Thomas scored the opening four points and never trailed in the first set, extending their lead to as many as nine at 17-8. 

  • Set 2 – Trailing 14-10 midway through the second stanza, the Bobcats scored nine of the ensuing 11 points to pull ahead 19-16. McPherson flipped the advantage behind a 4-0 rally, holding onto the lead at 22-21 behind a 4-0 STU run ended the frame. 

  • Set 3 – The Bulldogs broke a 3-3 stalemate with back-to-back points and kept the lead for the duration of the set. 

  • Set 4 – The Bobcats jumped out to a 3-0 lead and defended the advantage until a late 7-1 stretch by McPherson propelled them to a 20-16 lead. 

  • Set 5 – McPherson overcame an early 7-3 deficit to even the score at 10-all, keeping it tied at 12-12 before STU scored the final three points of the match. 

 
NOTEWORTHY: 

  • It is the second-straight year STU began pool play with a 3-2 victory, defeating seventh-seeded Corban as the 18 seed. 

  • Tayla Barnes added 15 kills on top of seven assisted blocks and one solo block. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: 

  • The Bobcats ended the match with 63 kills on a .167 hitting percentage versus 61 kills on a .203 clip for the Bulldogs. 

  • STU served nine aces while McPherson had four. 

  • St. Thomas tallied one solo block and 24 assisted, McPherson logged two solo and 20 assisted. 

  • St. Thomas held a 74-69 advantage in digs. 

UP NEXT: 

The Bobcats take on 10th-seeded Oklahoma Wesleyan with a spot in the Quarterfinals on the line on Friday, Dec. 6 with first serve set for 8:30 p.m.
