Onward To History! Volleyball Sweeps Oklahoma Wesleyan To Advance To NAIA Quarterfinals For The First Time

Sioux City, Iowa. – Behind a defensive effort that held Oklahoma Wesleyan to a .000 hitting percentage for the match on Friday evening, the seventh-seeded St. Thomas Volleyball Team swept the 10th-seeded Eagles (25-10, 25-19, 25-22) to advance to the NAIA Quarterfinals for the first time in program history.

HOW IT HAPPENED:  

  • Set 1 – St. Thomas scored the opening six points and never trailed in the first set, holding their opposition to a -.147 hitting percentage while boasting a .324 clip to quickly go up 1-0 overall. 

  • Set 2 – After splitting the initial eight points of the second set the Bobcats scoredd three straight while holding Oklahoma Wesleyan to only one run of three-consecutive points during the stanza to move one frame closer to advancing. 

  • Set 3 – The Bobcats started the third set with a point and never trailed, fending off a late comeback effort by the Eagles that got them within one at 17-16 with four-straight points to make it 21-16.

NOTEWORTHY: 

  • It is the first time in program history that the Bobcats have advanced past pool play. 

  • Tayla Barnes led the Bobcats behind eight kills on a .429 hitting percentage on top of one solo block and eight assisted. 

  • Bianca Grassi anchored the defense behind 13 digs, becoming the Sun Conference's all-time leader in career digs with her first of the contest that gave her 2203.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: 

  • The Bobcats ended the match with 39 kills on a .192 hitting percentage versus 25 kills on a .000 clip for the Eagles. 

  • STU served five aces while Oklahoma Wesleyan had one. 

  • St. Thomas tallied four solo block and 16 assisted, Oklahoma Wesleyan logged two solo and six assisted. 

  • St. Thomas held a 49-40 advantage in digs.

The Bobcats take on second-ranked Indiana Wesleyan in the Quarterfinals on Saturday, Dec. 7 with first serve slated for 6:30 pm Eastern Time.
